The Nuss procedure is done for severe cases of pectus excavatum in children, a chest deformity in which the breastbone is deformed leading to a sunken or caved in chest.
Because the sunken chest puts pressure on the lungs and heart, this condition often causes difficulty with exercise and physical activities due to breathing problems, fatigue, chest pain, rapid heartbeat or heart palpitations and frequent respiratory infections.
